workout

For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do us part….. I keep finding myself in a workout class. Since Bandier closed Studio B to reopen a new location, I have been substituting my Studio B days with classes that I have either not attended in a while or a class I have been wanting to try. I find that my workout weekly routine consist of one yoga class, two dance cardio classes, one sculpting, one running, and one heavy weight class. I may switch out either running or the second dance cardio class with pilates or boxing. But that is my usually routine. I haven’t been trying that many new classes lately, instead been fine-tuning my weekly schedule to workouts I know and love. Here are some of my favorite classes to attend in New York.

DanceBody

Want to dance or get a good sculpting class in? DanceBody has been my go-to studio for both lately. I mostly attend the sculpting, only because I attend a lot of dance cardio classes and not enough sculpt only classes. Trying to change that. Anyway, if you attend the cardio classes it’s an hour long dance session with choreographed routines that you can easily pick up as it is repeated throughout the song. They do offer a class called Follow Along that is non-choreographed for those of you who may not like dance cardio. They also offer an Express class that is cardio and sculpting in 45 minutes. Think lunch time workout. The Signature class is the standard one that everyone goes to; choreographed dance cardio, toning, and fun! Then there are two other classes: Level 10 and Full Out. Those two are for the insane people who want to take the classes to the next level for a more intense workout. I have yet to do it, but no doubt I will someday.  DanceBody is a fun, positive environment. The teachers are hands-on, meaning they will correct your form (which is good!). The dance cardio is more dance centered– meaning it’s not clap, clap, kick ball change, burpee. It’s hip-hop meets dance cardio meets ballet (arabesque, attitude, jet, etc).  Even if you have never dance before you will still have the time of your life jamming out to Beyonce or Rihanna. DanceBody has a new studio located in NoMad that is just beautiful! Go and check it out!

305 Fitness

If you are looking for a fun place where you can dance like Beyonce in a music video then 305 Fitness is for you. I love going to 305 to shake my booty and dance like no one is watching in the club. It’s a rave meets workout. It’s upbeat, fast past, and full of energy. It’s an hour long cardio class with a live DJ and rhythmic lights. You get sweaty, feel sultry and sassy, and leave more confident. On their website it says this is an addictive cardio party and it’s 100% true. You will go home after your first class and immediately sign up for another one. The teachers are high energy (I don’t know how they do it!), positive, and so much fun. There is no hiding in the corner; you utilize every side, corner, space in the studio. Shake your hips and get low at 305 Fitness– you will never have more fun than you do here.

Y7

Yoga does not have to be zen, clear your mind, namaste. With Y7 you get hip-hop meets hot yoga. That’s right! You do your sun-salutations to Drake or Kendrick Lamar while the heat is on through an infrared heating system that gets up to 80-90 degrees. Practicing yoga in a heated room will help with your circulation, detox chemicals and toxins in the body, free fatty acids, increase growth of cells, improves metabolism, reduces stress, helps with flexibility, and burns more calories. If the heat is too much for you during a Y7 class, then sit there in child’s pose. That is what I like most about Y7 is the structure of the class. You go through 3 different sequences; first learning the sequence, then at a faster past with the instructor, then you have about a minute or two to go through the sequence on your own at your own pace. At this point I usually do it once on my own, then either stretch or sit in child’s pose. Yoga is all about your own journey, so if you do not like a certain move, skip it. I go to Y7 at least once a week, sometimes twice if I need it. I go if my body is tired and aching and needs to stretch, and I go if I want to detox my body. Oh and if you go on Hip-Hop Wednesdays tribute to Rihanna (or anyone else) and I am there, and you hear someone singing during class… it’s me. Can’t help it.
