new york city workout guide

Is it too late to work on my summer body? Maybe I should call this holidays are coming workout plan? I have taken a little break from my dance cardio classes to try some new and different workouts around New York. When I think of the classes that I have gravitated towards, only one word comes to mind. Powerful. I feel powerful. And each class has given me a different type of power; from strength to speed to personal. I feel a since of confidence. That I can do this, take on whatever challenge is a head of me. Which is evidently my new life’s motto (along with I am good enough).  So if I can make it through these classes, push myself and still love them, then you can too!

Mile High Run Club

Can’t stop. Won’t stop. Going to Mile High Run Club. I started a few weeks ago and have been going at least twice a week since. I guess I am a runner now…… I mean I have been doing a few 5Ks over the last year or so, but this seems more official to me. You could ask: Maggie, why are you spending money on a class where all you do is run, when you can run outside for free? That is true. However, when I run outside I get bored easily and don’t really push myself. In MHRC I push myself.  And no, do not ask me to run a marathon with you. I’ll stick to the treadmill.

MHRC is a 45 minute class where you run intervals and inclines. Just your classic, old school, no burpees or fancy jumps, cardio class. If you need a little more strength they have DASH 28– run for 28 minutes, then do kettlebell exercises for 10-15 minutes. What I love about Mile High is that I always have a sense of confidence during it. I know I can do this. I feel strong and powerful when I push myself to the speediest of speeds. And the blessing of it all is that you can choose your speed. Some days I barely keep a steady pace at 6.5mph, and other days I am flying high on 7.5mph and above. None of it matters as long as you are moving. I have seen people walk for majority of the class and that is ok.  I highly recommend Mile High– even if you hate to run.

The Class by Taryn Toomey

I discovered The Class through Instagram and immediately fell for its many beautiful pictures. Then a friend of mine started to rave about it and I knew I had to try it. Going into the class I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. I thought, from what I gathered on Insta, we were going to do some yoga moves, meditate where I can manifest a hunky new boyfriend and a winning lotto ticket, and easy to do, calm movements. We did do those things, but it was also very intense. A lot more intense than I thought. The whole thing was an experience more than a workout. I do not want to give too much away though. After class one time I was chatting with the instructor (bc I have become that annoying girl), and she told me they do not talk in detail about what goes on during class because they do not want people to have an expectation when coming in. They want it to be an experience. That is what you will surely get. I leave feeling like a freaking warrior. On good days or bad days The Class is exactly what I need in my life. Do yourself a favor and try it.

Also this is the only class I actually want to be full– more powerful in numbers. Any other class if you see me, don’t stand near me. I like my space and I like to travel.

Everybody Fights

A friend of mine, who lives in Boston, keeps raving about Everybody Fights to me. So when they opened up a studio in New York, she was kind enough to force me to go. She was right– I loved it. I went to the bags and beats class where you are literally hitting the bag to the beat of the song. A little tango with the bag… right up my alley. I was SO sore the next day but had a blast doing it. It has been a few months since I have taken a boxing class, it felt good to get back into it. I want to try out some of the other classes they offer, but I think bags and beats is going to become my go-to. Everybody Fights is owned by George Foreman lll, so you know it is a legit boxing studio. Which means you do not want to meet me in a dark alley.
