As a continual fitness resolution from last year I am still trying new workouts and fitness studios here in New York City. With only a month into the new year I have already gone to two new workouts and loved both. The two new classes that I took have been on my list of workouts to try for a while. I either couldn’t find the time to attend them or didn’t want to give up one of my beloved classes. I have many different fitness studios and workouts that I love to go to that it’s hard to pick which exercise to do throughout the week. At this rate if I want to attend all of the workouts that I love, I may end up exercising all day, every day. Anyway, I really loved the new workouts and can’t wait to go back!

I am back to the drawing board on what to take next. I know I want to incorporate more HIIT workouts but am up for anything. I do want to try something completely different than anything I have done before. If you have any suggestions on studios to try in the city I could love to hear!

The Rickey Sisters

For months I was seeing Instagram Stories and post about this dance cardio/hip hop class with two sisters. It immediately got my attention as, no secret here, I love to dance. I started following The Rickey Sisters, Alyssa and Sammy, and put them on my list of workouts to try in the city. Time past and I had yet to pull the trigger in attending their class at Studio B (they also teach on Obé). To be honest I was nervous to go. I didn’t grow up learning hip hop in my dance studio and I knew from watching them dance on Instagram that the choreography was different than my normal dance cardio classes. Lets be honest, I do not have the hip hop swag. Well one day the sister’s slid into my DM’s and asked me to try out their class. I was over the moon excited and happy I was finally going to attend! No excuses now! I went into the class mentally preparing myself to do 5-6 dances. I figured I would have to play follow the leader and try to catch on to the already learned dances. Which is what most of my dance cardio classes are like. The Rickey Sister’s are different. You learn one dance for the entire duration of class. They teach you either a step or an 8 count and have you repeat it a bunch of times with music until you have it down. Then they teach you the next few steps. It felt as if I was back in my old dance competition days, learning a routine. Each class you learn a different dance so everyone is on the same page on not knowing the steps. Which is really nice for newcomers. I had a BLAST dancing with them!  I thought the choreography was fun, the sister’s are a hoot– they have great energy and can laugh at themselves. Everyone was encouraging when we did the dance in groups and individually with the sister’s. You do not have to do it individually if you do not want to,  so do not let that stop you from going. I believe I was the first one to raise my hand in dancing alone with the girls. They posted it on Instagram, see below. I am obviously no Rickey Sister but I had fun!

Fithouse

Another studio that I started to see pop up regularly on my Instagram. I was very curious about Fithouse because I kept seeing different styles of exercises. It turns out that Fithouse offers a large variety of classes to take; yoga, barre, sculpt, HIIT, trampoline, dance cardio. In a way you could pay a membership fee and get a well rounded workout from just one place. It reminds me of System of Strength, the studio I go to back home in Columbus. They have the same format of one place offering a variety of classes. I really like this idea because it not only saves money, but you can take a double without leaving the facility. It also encourages you to try new workouts– you are already comfortable with the place and the teachers. For my first Fithouse class I took sculpt. I knew it would have the most familiarized movements and something I can do. This way I can ease into the vibe of the studio. A comfort in the unknown. I really enjoyed my sculpt class and felt it to be a little different than the others I take. It may have just been the class I took, but there was no bells and whistles, just 3lb/5lb weights. The movements are not rushed, they are slowed down so you really have to engage your muscles instead of using momentum to move. The next class I want to try is their HIIT class.  As I mentioned I want to incorporate more HIIT workouts and haven’t really found one in the city that I truly love. They also offer a hot yoga sculpt class that I am dying to take. Fithouse is located in Tribeca and NOHO, and they are opening up a new studio (in 2 days!) in Union Square!
