mens fall fashion

During fashion week I was chit-chatting with two of my male blogging friends about, well, mens fashion. I was curious first of all about what it’s like to be a male blogger, and also what type of demographic are they reaching; are their male followers engaging? Are they actually into fashion or just fashion victims looking for help? Are they mostly gay or straight? As someone who only has a few male followers (Hello Gentlemen!), blogging for men inquisitively fascinates me. Now I have made it a goal to attend at least one mens fashion week show here in New York to see what it is like…… ok fine I just want to watch male models walk down the runway in beautiful clothes.

Now that fall is approaching I thought it was time to do my traditional once a season shout out to all the fellas out there. One of the key elements of fall is outerwear of course. Mostly, for mens style, I gravitate towards the classic Barbour jacket, but I also want to mix in the classic trench coat for you. Bring back the trench coat for men! I want to see more men walking around in the timeless piece; think Robert Redford in The Way We Were or George Peppard in Breakfast at Tiffany’s! Oh you don’t think about them as much as I do? Well you should! Those men knew how to dress. Trench coats are sharp, classic, and elegant. Do yourself a favor and add it to your collection of coats, or ladies go out and buy your S/O a trench and then thank god for every day that it rains.

Another key element in dressing for the fall season is layering. Men do an excellent job at layering; a classic button down under a sweater. What I would like to see more of is men wearing cardigans as a layering option instead of a classic crew neck cashmere or cable-knit sweater. You can style the cardigan buttoned up or left opened.  Another item I swoon over is a  turtleneck. I am trying to get my dad to wear a turtleneck with a blazer…. he just ignores me when I mention it, but it’s worth a try. It reminds me of Mad Men era. It doesn’t have to be a full neck, it can be a mock neck sweater. I love the look!

When it comes to mens style I like classic, tailored looks. I would love to hear from my male followers on where you shop and what fall items you are current coveting? Until then I will just keep googling images of Robert Redford for fashion inspiration.
