Christmas time is here! I have all of my shopping done, but I still have not wrapped any gifts. That is on my agenda for today. There are many Christmas traditions I am looking forward to doing; going to church, heading to my neighbors for their Christmas Eve party, watching White Christmas, my dad reading The Polar Express (when we were little), and my favorite tradition- the wrapping competition.

As a tradition each year my entire family has a gift wrapping competition. We each get one person to shop for (we drawl names- this year I have my grandmother and my aunt has me). Then there is a theme that is announced on Thanksgiving, given by the previous year’s winner. My brother-in-law won last year, so he is in charge of the theme. The theme can be anything you want. We have had Harry Potter, favorite Christmas songs, a favorite city you currently do not live in, football players, etc. This year’s theme is your favorite winter activity. For my gift, I am creating The Nutcracker. I am not much of a winter person, but I do love Christmas and seeing The Nutcracker. After the holidays, I will be hibernating until the sun comes back out.

Over the years the creativity of the gift wrapping competition has become really impressively exceptional. Gone are the days of printing out a picture and taping it onto the package. Well, unless you are my uncle who each year shows up with a white box and says he likes peace and quiet…… The rest of us craft cities, turn gifts into creatures, basically DIY the heck out of the theme. There are poems read and music created to accompany gifts. It’s a lot of fun and my favorite part of Christmas day!
