During the holiday season, although joyful and magical, can be hard on some. Those that may not be able to gift their loved ones with presents, buy food to feed themselves, or those trying to better their lives but do not have the right materials and resources to do so. This time of year it is important to lend a hand and give back. Since today is Giving Tuesday I thought I’d share with you ways that I give back; whether it’s donating toys, feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving, or “adopting” a family in need and giving them supplies. I try to do something different each year. This holiday season, however, I am continuing to give back the same way I have been doing all year.

Although we tend to only help during the holidays, there is one thing I try to do each month. Once a month I go to random churches around the city and to different organizations and donate clothes, food, and beauty products. It’s easy to do, you already have what you need in your closet and cabinets. Go through them and find something you no longer wear or never wore, find items in your cabinet that you may not use like canned soups (make sure it’s within the expiration date though). Next time you go to the grocery store pick up a few items to donate– chips, canned goods, protein bars, bread, produce, etc. Each church has their own organization that could use whatever it is that you have. Even if it is only an old t-shirt, they will be happy to have it. Someone, somewhere will be happy to have it.

I think right now more than ever we need to lend a helping hand, show a little grace and compassion towards each other. It does not have to be through some big production, it can be as simple as giving a dollar to someone homeless you pass by, giving a loved one a hug or phone call, shovel your neighbors driveway or fix their fence, donate your old clothes, buy produce and give them to your local church, buy a kid in need a toy, smile at a stranger, send your parents flowers, donate to those currently struggling through a natural disaster or tragedy, or send books to children’s hospitals. Do something this holiday season to brighten someones day. There is way too much negativity and hate in this world right now, be someone who shows love and compassion for others. ‘Tis the season give to others, the time to be selfless, and the time to show your love. Find a way that you too can give back.
