Lately I have been teaming with Maggy London to showcase some of my favorite things to do in New York during the spring (seen here, here, and here). Today I am going to talk about my all-time favorite thing to do in New York, and that is go to the Met Opera House to see the American Ballet Theatre perform. During Met Season ABT performs about 5-6 different ballets each year. Tonight I am going to see one of my favorite ballets, Giselle.

Giselle, for those of you who do not know, (SPOILERS) is a old romantic ballet about a peasant girl (named Giselle) who dies of a broken heart because the one she loves (Albrecht) is already engaged to another (a little over dramatic isn’t she?). Albrecht catfishes Giselle into falling in love with him– disguises himself as a peasant and not some richy-rich guy with a cool looking sword. Meanwhile another guy named Hilarion is also in love with Giselle– must be nice having two guys be head over heels in love with you….. Hilarion of course is jealous of Albrecht and warns Giselle to not fall in love with him. But Giselle is a strong independent woman who does whatever she wants and continues to be wooed catfished by Albrecht. Hilarion, like any stage 5 clinger, outs Albrecht for who is really is— a good looking guy with lots of money— because no girl wants that…

This is when Giselle and everyone else discovers Albrecht is engaged to another. And there she goes.

So Giselle dies and is then summoned from her grave by the Willis, a group of spirits who dance men to their death (where can I get their number?). They are virginal women who died before getting married from a broken heart and pretty much hate all men now. They summon Giselle to take revenge on her lover. Well first Hilarion visits her grave because death will not end his clinginess. He is chased away because he is scared of the girl mob, lead by leader and grilboss, the Beyonce of the group, Myrtha. Albrecht shows like a typical guy who wants what he can’t have, to mourn. While he is there the Willis appear again and sentence Albrecht to his death, but Giselle is all like don’t do it I love him still, blah blah.  Meanwhile Hilarion obviously does not own a treadmill because he gets caught by the Willis and they force him to dance to his death. So while Hilarion is doing the jig to his last dying breath (and we already know he is out of shape so it won’t take long), the Willis put their focus back on Albrecht. Giselle is still being a typical girl telling her friends he has changed. But her friends foresee the future and it’s going to be this back and forth type of thing, so they’re like nope, not going through this rollercoaster and they sentence Albrecht to death. Giselle, because she is so full of love, leaves her girl gang and gets to rest in peace in her grave like nothing ever happened.

Yes, this ballet is one of my favorites, don’t judge me until you have seen it. It is beautifully done. The dance of the Willis is by far my favorite dance/scene in any ballet (right next to Romeo and Juliet’s first night together).

I still believe in dressing up to go to the ballet or any musical performance really. I always get upset when I see people in jeans. The Met Opera house is one place you must dress up for. Back in the day men would wear tuxes and women would wear ballgowns to go to the ballet. I would love to live in those days. Today I will wear a dress like this fit and flare from Maggy London. It fits nicely around the bodice and flares at the bottom. The floral print is beautiful and perfect for spring. I would wear this to a wedding or special event, and of course the ballet.

*Thank you Maggy London for sponsoring this post. The opinions and options are my own.
